Myanmar’s Lower House Speaker U Khin Yi has called for closer scrutiny of the funding sources, financial flows, and spending of registered local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs and INGOs) in coordination with relevant government agencies.

Speaking during a meeting with the parliamentary committee on domestic and international NGOs on July 21, U Khin Yi said the committee should verify organizations’ registration status, operational activities, and financial transparency to ensure they comply with national laws and contribute to the country’s development and humanitarian efforts.

He also urged lawmakers to review existing legislation and consider whether new laws governing NGO and INGO management, foreign assistance transparency, volunteer services, data protection, public benefit organizations, and humanitarian coordination are needed.

The Lower House speaker said the committee should engage directly with NGOs and INGOs to understand their challenges and raise relevant issues in parliament, while strengthening oversight to ensure the organizations effectively support the country and its people.
