Myanmar’s Union Minister for Energy, U Ko Ko Lwin, invited Chinese companies with strong technological and human resource capacities to invest in Myanmar’s mature onshore oil fields and collaborate on production enhancement projects.
The minister, who is visiting China at the invitation of Zhang Jianhua, head of China’s National Energy Administration, attended the 2025 International Forum on Energy Transition and visited several oil fields in Yulin Province on October 18.
During the visit, the state-owned Yan Chang Petroleum Group demonstrated how it uses advanced technologies to boost oil recovery, manage reservoirs, recycle injected water, and digitally control production while minimizing environmental impacts.
On October 19, North Petroleum & Chemical Corporation briefed the Myanmar delegation on technologies for improving oil output in mature fields, digital field management, and results achieved through advanced production methods.
Minister U Ko Ko Lwin noted that Myanmar’s onshore oil fields are similar in maturity to those in China, but China’s efficient use of modern technology has significantly increased production, allowing up to 90% of recoverable oil and gas to be extracted.
He invited Chinese companies to partner with Myanmar in oil field development and training programs, emphasizing cooperation between Chinese experts and Myanmar engineers to overcome technical challenges. The minister also expressed interest in sending Myanmar staff to Chinese oil universities and companies for practical training, aiming for future independent technological implementation.
The delegation later discussed detailed cooperation methods with company officials and visited a factory producing wireless 3D seismic equipment, where they observed production, assembly, testing, and live demonstrations of the advanced technology.
