Myanmar’s National Defence and Security Council has formed a new committee to combat fake news, misinformation, and inappropriate online content, according to a notice issued on August 14, 2025.

The committee, led by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, includes senior officials from the Ministries of Transport and Communications, Legal Affairs, Information, the Central Bank of Myanmar, the military, and the Myanmar Police Force.

Its main duties are to monitor the internet 24 hours a day, identify and block content such as fake news, sexually explicit material, and politically motivated attacks, and take legal action against offenders under existing laws.

The team will also coordinate with telecom operators and banks to suspend phone numbers and freeze bank accounts used in online offenses.

Additionally, the committee plans to conduct public awareness campaigns warning citizens that posting or sharing such content may result in prosecution.
