Myanmar embassy in Tokyo cracks down on illegal sale of online appointments for passport renewal
Published 21 February 2025

The Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo has announced that it is reviewing and canceling online appointments for passport renewal that have been obtained and sold for profit.

According to the embassy’s statement on February 18, the online appointment system was designed to facilitate scheduling for those unable to visit the embassy in person due to work commitments.

In order to provide convenient services to Myanmar citizens, the Online Appointment System was implemented from 1-4-2024, as there has been a huge increase in the number of people who come to the embassy in person.

To accommodate such individuals, the embassy has allowed a family member or trusted acquaintance to apply on their behalf with a formal authorization letter. However, the embassy has discovered that some individuals have been exploiting this policy for personal gain.

It was found that certain individuals were securing multiple appointments under various names and email addresses, not for their own use but to sell them for a fee. As a result, genuine applicants have faced difficulties in securing appointments for passport renewal.

To address this issue, the embassy has been systematically verifying and canceling appointments suspected of being acquired for profit. If legitimate applicants find their appointments canceled during this process, they are advised to visit the embassy in person with complete documentation. The embassy has assured that it will conduct the necessary verification and provide assistance accordingly.
