The Ministry of Commerce announced on December 5 that regular salary earners and other income earners who remit $50,000 or more in a year can now import one electric car or one electric motorcycle annually, equivalent to five percent of the total remittance amount.
The ministry’s statement clarified that the notification issued on October 13, 2023, has been amended to facilitate easier compliance for eligible individuals.
The revised policy aims to promote the use of electric vehicles in Myanmar and support environmental conservation. Myanmar citizens working abroad will be granted special permits for importing electric vehicles if they remit their salaries or other incomes through official bank channels.
Under the amended rules, regular wage earners, including seafarers, and other income earners will be allowed to import one electric car or one electric motorcycle per year. Import can be done individually or, if a single transfer does not cover the vehicle’s total value, multiple remittances may be combined to meet the required amount.
Previously, an October 2023 statement allowed regular salary earners to import one electric vehicle per year only if they remitted $200,000 or more, valued at up to 5% of their remitted amount. The new rules lower the remittance threshold for all income earners to $50,000, expanding access to electric vehicle imports.
