Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Bendito dos Santos Freitas, paid a working visit to Myanmar from 17 to 19 September 2025.
On 18 September, he held talks with Myanmar’s Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, U Than Swe, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw. The two ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and emphasized the importance of upholding ASEAN’s core principles and the ASEAN Charter, particularly the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states.
During the meeting, Timor-Leste officially proposed to open an embassy in Dili and reaffirmed its commitment to preventing illegal organizations from carrying out activities against the Myanmar government or establishing offices in Timor-Leste.
The discussions also touched on practical cooperation, including plans to sign bilateral agreements on visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic and official passports, as well as a tourism visa waiver scheme in line with ASEAN agreements.
