Myanmar migrant workers working in Thailand are visiting their homes in new year holidays and most of them returned to their homes via Myawady-Mae Sot border, sources said.

Factories in Thailand are closed for Christmas and new year holiday periods from December 23 and it is coincidence with Kayin New Year Day, according to migrant workers.

Ko Moe, a Myanmar migrant worker from a construction site in Kanchanaburi Province said, “Factories in Thailand closed for ten days from January 1 to 10 in the new year holiday period. I took leave in advance.”

Thousands of Myanmar migrant workers are waiting at No.1 Friendship Bridge to return home since 10 am on December 23.

Phoe Kwar Lay, a Kayin ethnic said, “I returned back to my native to celebrate with my family, relatives and friends as my holiday period is coincidence with Kayin New Year Day.”

About 400,000 Myanmar migrant workers are working in nine towns in Tak Province including Mae Sot and some are already returned home but most of them are planned to return home at the end of December.
