From January to November, this year, Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) dealt with 966 out of 2,818 complaints, according to a statement issued by the commission on December 9.

The MNHRC issued this statement to mark 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day which falls on December 10.

Yu Lwin Aung, spokesperson of the MNHRC said: “The remaining complaints have nothing to do with human rights. The abuse of power by authorized persons, servicemen, police and civil servants is designated as human right cases. Cases like domestic disputes between couples and other marital affairs such as unlawful marriage with another woman are done to be in accordance with the laws. Myanmar’s human right status is said to be improving. There is no exact rule of measurement on how the human right conditions have improved.”

In order to understand the impacts of human rights described in the universal declaration on human right declaration on their daily lives of the people, the commission is working on human right promotion and knowledge sharing on an extensive scale, the statement says.

The commission has distributed the universal human right declaration in Myanmar language and 12 ethnic languages. This year, the commission gave human right talks in 23 townships nationwide. In addition, the commission held the educative talks in 12 villages in Yangon and Ayeyawady Regions. The commission opened three educative courses in cooperation with civil society organizations. It also conducted the human right subject at the military and police training schools and the Central Institute of Civil Service, the statement adds.
