As election is of crucial importance in a multi-party democracy, there must be a free and fair election, said Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The military chief made the remark in his message sent for the fifth anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) that fell on October 15.

He spoke of the need to choose parliamentary representatives having legislative interest and being capable of serving the country’s best interest with the genuine union spirit.

“Only if we make the correct choice, will we be able to enjoy the fruits of democracy, peace and development. The Tatmadaw (military) will cooperate with all the national brethren in building a union based on democracy and federalism as they wish,” Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said.

He also called for extensive participation of all the national races and political parties in State building.

Only such an inclusive participation would contribute towards the regional and racial interests, he added.

The military chief pointed out that it would be difficult to carry out democratic reform without lasting peace, stressing the need to realize peace efforts and agreements in a harmonious manner and in accord with democratic norms.
