Malaysia ‘violated anti-terrorism agreements’ by meeting with NUG representatives: SAC Spokesperson

A meeting between the Malaysian Foreign Minister and representatives of National Unity Government (NUG) violated the anti-terrorism agreements, said Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, a spokesperson for the State Administration Council (SAC) and Deputy Minister for Information.

Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun made the remarks in response to a question from the Thuriya Ne Wun News Agency about the meeting between the Malaysian Foreign Minister and NUG representatives at a press conference held by the SAC on April 19 at the Ministry of Information.

"The Malaysian foreign minister has met with people from the NUG in the United States and it made to encourage the terrorism. In addition to encouraging, it is hampering the Myanmar government's efforts and violating international anti-terrorism agreements,” he said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reacted strongly to the meeting between the Malaysian Foreign Minister and NUG representatives and will continue to take necessary actions in line with foreign policy in the national interest of the country, he said.

He said, “Myanmar strongly opposes this. We have sent a letter of protest to the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warning that Malaysian cabinet members and MPs should not engage in similar interactions in the future."

Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun said that the Charge d'Affaires of the Malaysian Embassy in Yangon was also summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protest and that the demands of the Malaysian Foreign Minister will be known at the meeting.

"What the Malaysian foreign minister asked for when he was in the United States. He said there are 250,000 Myanmar refugees in their country. There are more than 100,000 Bengali refugees in Malaysia. There are also requests for support. It has gone far beyond that. We see it that way,” he said.

Myanmar is a sovereign country, and Tatmadaw is committed to a multi-party democracy that the people aspire to. It guarantees a union system based on democracy and federalism. He called on all parties to oppose acts that are caused by political egos and that cause loss of life and property of the people and discredit the country internationally.
