There was a sorrowful accident in Mon State on August 9 this year, killing nearly 70 people and injuring more than 40 others. The Weekly Eleven picks it as the most severe natural disaster of the year 2019.
Due to the collapse of Malat mountain in Thaephyugone village-tract in Paung Township in Mon State, around 27 houses and ten vehicles on Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway, were covered in and damaged by mud.
Mon State MP Zaw Zaw Htoo from Paung Township Constituency-2 raised a question of whether there was a plan to conduct the surveys on the landslides in Paung Township.
At the regular session of Mon State Parliament on September 19, Dr. Min Kyi Win, Mon State Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation replied that according to the experts, the collapse of the mountain was linked to heavy rains, the inflow of water into cracks and the presence of many slopes.
MP Zaw Zaw Htoo said: “As far as I know, Mon State government reclaimed the 60x80 land plots for the resettlement of affected families, as from September 24. The State government will build concrete roads, erect electric posts and build drainage channels. The next step is water supply. The government plans to build the house worth Ks around 10 million. The project will be developed in the pasture. The affected families will have landownership.”
The resettlement plan will depend on census and households. According to the census, there are around 30 households. Only 24 households will get houses as according to the list, there are 24 households only, MP Zaw Zaw Htoo added.
Currently, the houses are under construction. The affected families have not got any accommodation. Some families have submitted a request letter as they have no desire to live there.
