More than 10 monasteries and houses in Thein Kone and Ma Yoe Kone villages of Pakokku Township were evacuated in the third week of September due to landslides along the Ayeyarwady River.

Residents said the affected monasteries and houses face difficulties as no new land has yet been secured for rebuilding.

“The landslides are so severe that the ground where the monastery once stood has disappeared. We are dismantling and moving immediately, but since no land is available yet, people are temporarily staying in nearby villages and monasteries. Some families have moved in with relatives,” said U Adikha from Thein Kone Monastery.

In the first week of September, nearly 20 houses were also evacuated due to similar incidents in Thein Kone and Ma Yoe Kone villages, and most remain without land to resettle.

“We moved our mother’s house just in time, because the next day it collapsed into the river. The rise and fall of the water level has worsened the cliff erosion. Other houses are also being moved as quickly as possible,” said a Pakokku resident who assisted in the relocation.

Currently, Myin Kyun, Thein Kone, and Ma Yoe Kone villages in the Myin Kyun group of Pakokku Township continue to face serious erosion from the Ayeyarwady River. The entire population of Myin Kyun village has already been evacuated.
