A husband and wife stepped on a landmine which killed him and injured his wife at a pomelo farm in Angabo Village, Kyaikto Township at around 11:50 am on December 28, according to locals.

A local said that they are U Naing Win and his wife Daw Mi Mi from Angabo Village.

He continued, “I heard two explosions. Later, when we went to look, we saw both husband and wife lying down. I informed the social rescue team about that."

U Naing Win suffered lacerations in his limbs and abdomen as a result of the landmine explosion, and Daw Mi Mi suffered lacerations on her left hip, abdomen and arms. The two were sent by ambulance to Thaton District Public Hospital and while they were receiving medical treatment, U Naing Win died of his injuries at around 4:30 pm and Daw Mi Mi was also transferred from Thaton District Public Hospital to Yangon General Hospital for further medical treatment.

More than half of the townships in Myanmar are at risk of landmines, and the local people living in these areas have lost their lives and limbs due to invisible mines underground. On December 28, the Landmines and Secondary Explosive Munitions Monitoring Group (LUM) issued a notice that as the military conflict escalates, the risk of landmines is getting worse day by day across Myanmar.
