Airport surveillance radar will be installed at Nay Pyi Taw International Airport (YIA) with the assistance of Grand Aid from Japan to control flights, according to the Department for Civil Aviation (DCA).
The Air Navigation Safety Division is providing 24-hour air traffic control services and navigational aids for all flights operating at the YIA including international flights overflying Myanmar.
“We divided four sectors in the flight information region of Myanmar to control flights. The air traffic control was upgraded from procedure control to radar control system in 1996. We will install airport surveillance radar with Japanese aid,” said an official from the DCA.
The DCA is providing aviation services for 20 international airways and 36 domestic airways in Myanmar air territory.
Myanmar is upgrading its aviation surveillance system with a two-year plan with Japanese aid and it will start in 2019-20 FY. JICA and DCA signed the contract to upgrade the aviation surveillance system at the end of April.
The DCA and JICA signed the final minutes of discussion (MD) in December. The exchange of note was signed at Nay Pyi Taw on April 10, 2019 and the agreement was signed at Yangon on April 29, 2019.
The central aviation control center cannot track the landing and take-off of aircraft at Nay Pyi Taw International Airport using radars from Yangon and Mandalay and if the radar with the Japanese aid is finished install at the Nay Pyi Taw International Airport, the aviation surveillance system will be improved.
