The Ministry of Commerce said import permits will be issued this month for 34 electric vehicles (EVs) among the applications submitted to import EVs as replacements for old and aged vehicles.

The Ministry of Commerce announced the scheme for scrapping old and aged vehicles and importing replacement electric vehicles on 28 May 2026, citing concerns that old and worn-out vehicles consume more fuel, resulting in losses to public funds; their poor mechanical condition can cause road accidents; and excessive exhaust emissions can harm the environment.

Following the announcement, applications were submitted to the Road Transport Administration Department (RTAD) to import electric vehicles as replacements for old and aged vehicles that had been surrendered to the department. Of these applications, import permits for 34 EVs will be issued within this month.

The Ministry of Commerce also said applications to import replacement electric vehicles from the remaining vehicles surrendered to the RTAD will continue to be scrutinized and permits issued in accordance with the prescribed requirements.
