A total of 487 prisoners were released from prisons, detention centers, and labour camps in Bago Region on April 17, according to sources.
In Bago Region, the number of prisoners released from the prisons are as per following: 61 male prisoners and 11 female prisoners, totaling 72, from Thayawady Prison, 82 male prisoners and 43 female prisoners, totaling 125 from DaikU Prison, 55 male prisoners and 12 female prisoners, totaling 67 from Toungoo Prison, 68 male prisoners and 12 female prisoners, totaling 80, from Pyay Prison, 37 male prisoners and 10 female prisoners, totaling 47, from Bago Prison, 42 male prisoners and 3 female prisoners, totaling 45, from Paungde Prison, prisoners, 24 prisoners from Kyaiksakaw Prison, and 27 prisoners from Shwe Mya Ya Prison.
The Chairman of the State Administration Council, in commemoration of the Myanmar New Year, in order to appease the hearts and minds of the people and to show them the love and goodwill of the State, has ordered that all prisoners who are serving sentences in prisons, detention centres and camps before April 17, 2025 except for prisoners, who have committed serious crimes such as murder, rape, and explosives, convicted offences under the Unlawful Associations Act, offences under Section 19 (f) of the 1878 Arms Act, offences under the 1949 Arms (Emergency Punishment) (Temporary) Act, offences under the 1951 Arms (Temporary Amendment) Act, offences under the 1924 Shan State Arms Ordinance, offences under the 2023 Arms Act, prisoners/persons who have been convicted of any offence under any existing law, other than offences under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law, offences under the Natural Disaster Management Law, offences under the Anti-Terrorism Law and offences under the Anti-Corruption Law, and, are hereby granted remission of one-sixth of their remaining sentences under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Accordingly, pursuant to Order No. 30/2025, Section 401 (1), 4,893 prisoners have been granted remission of their remaining sentences under the condition that “if they commit another offence, they shall continue to serve the remaining sentences in addition to the current sentence.”
In addition, 13 foreign prisoners have also been granted amnesty by reducing the remaining sentences they have to serve.
