Some filling stations in Loikaw Township, Kayah State, are beginning to run out of fuel, causing public concern for travelling, say local sources.
Last night, some stations could not sell because they had no stock. This morning, many filling stations have to sell fuel under a quota system. They are selling fuel to cars and motorcycles only to fill their capacity. Previously, they could sell whole barrels of fuel. They said oil bowsers were not allowed to enter. They didn’t know when that will be allowed again,” said a resident from Myannigon Village on June 9.
In Kayan State, the majority of grassroots people have to rely on motorbikes for their travel. As there are a few taxis and private cars, a complete cut-off in fuels will cause travel difficulties.
“You know, here we have to rely on motorcycles for our travelling. Wherever we go, market or clinic, we have to use the motorbike. We are very much concerned about fuel shortages. There are very few taxis to rent. If fuels run out, how will we go outside?
Since May 30, large vehicles have not been allowed to pass through the town of Loikaw. Travellers have to go in small cars to Aungban of southern Shan State.
As trucks and oil bowsers cannot enter the town, there has been panic buying among rich people causing high prices of basic food and fuel.
