In Myitkyina, Kachin State, the price of a liter of gasoline has surged to 12,000 Kyats, and a bag of cement now costs over 60,000 Kyats, forcing the suspension of some activities, including construction, according to local residents.
“Many construction projects have stopped. The situation is worse than this. If ethnic armed groups don’t comply with China’s demands, this could last for months. With chicken priced at 40,000 Kyats per viss and pork over 60,000 Kyats per viss, it’s tough for the people. Some who migrated here from the lower regions are even selling their houses and moving back,” said a local business owner involved in masonry in Myitkyina.
Not only in Myitkyina, but also in regions like Moegaung, Moehnyin, Hopin, and Phakant, fuel is being transported solely by motorcycles due to the situation, sources reported.
“Nothing is coming from China. Trucks from the south can’t make it here either, so supplies are running out. Armed groups are also demanding fees from each village, making it more difficult. Road fees alone are over 10 million Kyats. Now, fuel costs over 12,000 Kyats per liter, but that’s for a full liter. Below that, you don’t get a full liter. On roadside stalls, it costs about 15,000 Kyats per liter,” said a fuel station owner.
Armed groups began attacking the military base in Indaw Town on August 16, blocking the main asphalt road passing through the town. While bypass routes are available, they are narrow village paths or dirt roads, only allowing smaller vehicles to pass.
Following the KIA’s capture of Panwa Town, all border checkpoints with China have been closed since October 18, halting the import of food and supplies from China.
