People who have not yet received a unique identification (UID) number (locally known as smart card) can do so for free at the immigration office in the township where they currently live, according to the information team of the State Administration Council (SAC).

In response to a media query on the Viber Group of the SAC, regarding the issue of requiring a smart card with a UID number when making a passport, the information team of the SAC added the above.

On March 19, 2024, the Myanmar Passport Issuing Board issued an instruction that when renewing or making a new passport, people must bring a certificate of identification that the UID number verified by the Ministry of Immigration and Population, which is called a smart card locally, has been issued.

"People who don't have a UID number yet, if they want to get a UID number, they don't need to go back to the town where they issued their national registration card (NRC). The UID number can be made free of charge by the township immigration office in the town where they currently live or the mobile teams in their wards," it said.

When conducting public service activities by government organizations and civic organizations, they will be based on the UID number, so the public will be able to feel the benefits sooner if the UID is done quickly, it said.
