Former Union Minister U Soe Win released from prison

U Soe Win, former Union Minister for Planning and Finance, who was serving 3 years of a jail sentence for violating the Official Secrets Act, has been released from prison according to sources close to his lawyers.

The 84 years old was charged along with former State Counsesllor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Australian economist Sean Turnell and former union minister U Kyaw Win and deputy minister U Sett Aung. They were charged with section 3 (1c) of the Myanmar Secrets Act and sentenced to 3 years in prison on September 28. U Soe Win was granted bail on health grounds while his case was being heard.

He was released from Yamethin prison after one month of sentencing. In the National League for Democracy administration, U Soe Win was appointed as union minister in 2018. He was a central economic committee member of NLD party during NLD reign.

U Hla Thien, former chairman of union election commission (UEC) from NLD and UEC member U Myint Naing were also released from Yamethin prison on October 26. They were charged under Section 130 (a) of the Penal Code for alleged violations of the electoral laws during the General Election-2020.
