The whole village of Nohpo in Sharpin village-tract, Pakokku township has been evacuated and some village pagodas collapsed after the erosion by the Ayeyawady River, according to Pakokku-based FLYDO Myanmar.
In the previous year also, some land plots of the village were washed away.
“We had to rush to that village for assistance last year. At that time, about two pagodas collapsed. At about 1am on July 7 this year also, some pagodas collapsed. Erosion has been seen since July 2,” said an official from FLYDO Myanmar
More than 300 acres of land were washed away last year and this year saw the whole village evacuate.
“The homes in the village are no longer suitable to live in. Now, the entire village has been evacuated. We are contacting other associations for help. There are only about 40 or 50 villages nearby,” he added.
Nohpo village had 43 homes with over 250 people engaging in agriculture, fishing and sales of local products to foreign tourists.
Some pagodas in the villages were washed away, and evacuation is going on.
