On September 4, the 25th anniversary celebration of Asia News Network (ANN) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was attended by EMG’s Executive Director Ko Min Thaw Htut along with Malaysia's Minister of Communications and representatives from 20 news agencies.
The meeting of editors from major news media companies in Asia was intended to promote regional current affairs.
Editors from 20 ANN member news agencies attended the event held on September 4.
ANN aims to promote regional news through the sharing of information among members.
Apart from Malaysia-based news agencies, other news agencies are from Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam.
At the event, the Chief Content Officer of Star Media Group (SMG) Datin Paduka Esther Ng said that she hopes the editors will have a comfortable stay in Malaysia.
At the event, the guests were treated to a welcome dinner, during which the editors exchanged views on developments in the media industry and discussed how to find out about unknown issues.
SMG CEO Chan Seng Fatt and Bernama chairman and SMG advisor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai also attended.
SMG’s Chief Content Officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng has been selected as the new ANN chairperson. Therefore, Esther Ng will serve in the place of the outgoing ANN chairman, Mahfuz Anam, and will start serving as the chairperson of ANN from January 1, 2025. She is the third woman to be appointed ANN chairperson.
“I want to share news differently. Times have changed, and there are modern ways to tell news stories,” said Esther Ng at an ANN's 25th anniversary related meeting held on September 5.
Last year's ANN meeting was held in Beijing, China for three days.
ANN was established in 1999, with seven members at the time of its establishment. There were only seven countries, and now there are 23 members from 21 countries. Eleven Media Group joined it in 2013.
To become a member of ANN, one must have an English-language daily newspaper, and current members have English-language daily newspapers.
