The World News Media Congress of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) is being held from June 28 to 30 at the Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei, Taiwan. On the opening day of the congress, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen gave a speech.

At the ceremony, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen made further promises about Taiwan's position regarding the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. "Regarding the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea disputes, the Taiwan government will avoid any confrontational situations," Tsai Ing-wen said.

In addition, Taiwan's independence will be protected, and our government will cooperate with neighboring countries and democratic partner countries for regional stability, she said.

Tsai Ing-wen said that their government is committed to the development of democracy in Taiwan and will cooperate with government and social organizations to overcome the danger of fake news and to prevent the public's freedom of speech from being stopped.

Ten years after Thailand hosted the World Media Congress in 2013, which is attended by thousands of media professionals from more than 70 countries every year, Taiwan was the first Asian country to hold the congress again.

CEO of Rappler, Maria A. Ressa, the famous Filipino writer, journalist and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner, also attended and delivered the opening speech, along with President Tsai Ing-wen, in the congress on June 28.

On the first day of the conference, the opening ceremony of the congress and the Golden Pen Award ceremony, awarded annually by WAN-IFRA, were held, and two imprisoned Iranian female journalists jointly won the award.

In addition, editorial and newsroom awards and digital media awards were also presented in the evening. The editorial and newsroom awards went to Emang Mutapati, editor-in-chief of The Voice Botswana, Glenda Gloria, Executive Editor of Rappler Philippines and Lina Ejeilat from Jordan. Last year's World Media Congress was held in Zaragoza, Spain, and the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza won the Golden Pen of Freedom Award for 2022 of WAN-IFRA.

The Golden Pen Award has been awarded annually by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) since 1961. In 2013, the Chairman and CEO of Eleven Media Group, Dr. Than Thut Aung, was awarded the Golden Pen Award, becoming the fourth recipient of the award in Myanmar.

The first person to receive the Golden Pen Award from Myanmar was Guardian U Sein Win in 1963. In 2001, Hanthawady U Win Tin and Daw San San Nwe (Thayarwady) won it jointly.

Editorial Leadership Awards and Digital Media Awards were also awarded at the 2023 World News Media Congress.

The three-day congress is the most important annual gathering of news media executives, with 700 to 1,500 top executives from media industries in more than 80 countries attending.

In the congress, leading figures from the news media industry discussed the latest happenings, insights and development studies are being discussed.
