Authorities in several townships in Yangon and Mandalay Regions have carried out further destruction of voter lists, ballot papers, and related documents used in Myanmar’s 2020 multi-party general election after the legally prescribed retention period expired, according to township information offices.
In Yangon Region, the destruction took place in Yankin and Kyauktan townships. In Yankin Township, election materials including voter lists, ballot papers, and other election-related documents were burned on February 10 at 9 a.m. inside the township General Administration Office compound. The materials, which had been stored in sacks, were destroyed after exceeding the designated retention period.
Similarly, in Kyauktan Township, voter lists, ballot papers, and election-related documents from the 2020 general election were incinerated in accordance with Article 111(b) of the relevant election by-laws, which permit destruction after the prescribed period has lapsed. A nine-member committee was formed to oversee the destruction process.
Earlier, on February 4 and 6, similar destruction of expired election materials was conducted in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township and Botahtaung Township in Yangon Region.
In Mandalay Region, election documents from the 2020 general election were also destroyed in Patheingyi and Tada-U townships, township authorities said.
In Patheingyi Township, the incineration was carried out on February 10 at around 11:30 am. at the municipal waste disposal site in Hnangyi village tract. The materials had been stored at the Mandalay District Sub-commission Office of the Union Election Commission before being destroyed by an authorized destruction committee.
