Eight killed, more than 100 injured as Tornado hit Leiway Township in Nay Pyi Taw

At least eight people have been killed and more than 100 were injured after tornadoes tore through Tada Oo village and Aung Myin Kone village in Leiway Township in Nay Pyi Taw in the evening of April 21.

Tornado touched down around 6:30 pm on April 21 in Tada Oo village and Aung Myin Kone village in Kan Thar village tract, Leiway Township, destroying houses in these villages, and collapsing power lines.

Rescue works have been carried out in the tornado hit villages by local battalion, police members, officials from various ministries and social organizations.

According to the statement issued by the Myanmar Fire Services Department made on April 21 evening, 77 houses in Tada Oo village, 155 houses in Aung Myin Kone village were destroyed. In Tada Oo village, 48 people were injured and 16 were in critical condition, and two women were killed. In Aung Myin Kone village, 61 people were injured, 2 men and 2 women were killed. Those injured were admitted to 100-Bed hospital in Lei Way and 1000-Bed hospital in Zabyu Thiri Township. Search and rescue teams are combing the damaged areas.

Chairman of SAC Senior General Min Aung Hlaing went to the tornado hit areas and met locals, it is reported.
