The Democratic Party of National Politics (DNP) chairman Soe Maung has questioned the Union Election Commission (UEC) if it carried out its duties in all sincerity adding that it will not receive the protection of Section 86 of the election law.

Soe Maung shot the question duirng a press conference held at the Union Solidarity and Developemnt Party’s office in Bahan Township, Yangon.

He said according to Section 86 of the election law, No civil or criminal action shall be taken against the Election Commission if it discharges its duties in good faith and to the best of its ability. He however asked the commission if it had done its job in all sincerity.

“Did it discharge its duties in all sicerity or with honesty? Accoridng to this law, the UEC will get the law protection,” the DNP chairman said.

The UEC issued statements and one of its members wrote news articles referring to the DNP. One article hinted that the UEC could not be sued under Section 86 of the election law, Soe Maung added.

“We need to read Sections 86, 82 and 87 of the respective parliamentary election laws. I would like to explain to those unfamiliar with those laws. Section 86 stipulates that. But we we need to review so we can know if they did thier job in line with the law,” Soe Maung said.

As one of the examples, he explained the UEC failed to take action against those who canvassed for votes before the election campaign period although the law bans the commission from canvassing for votes for any candidate.
