The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) yesterday issued a warning to prepare for potential heavy rainfall, strong winds, flash floods, and landslides, as a tropical depression currently forming over the South China Sea may impact the region.
According to observations at 5:30 PM MST on September 17, the tropical depression could intensify, crossing inland areas of Vietnam on September 20, 2024, and reaching eastern Myanmar by September 21, 2024.
The remnants of the tropical depression, after crossing Myanmar, may redevelop into a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
The tropical depression is expected to move west-northwest and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area as it continues inland toward India over the next 12 hours.
Due to the intensity of the weather system, rain and thundershowers are likely to be widespread in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady, and Taninthayi Regions, as well as Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayah, Kayin, and Mon States.
Some areas may experience regionally heavy rainfall and strong winds between September 21 and 25, 2024.
The DMH has urged residents in hilly areas to be cautious of landslides, while those living near rivers and streams should be on alert for flash floods and water overflow.
Additionally, domestic riverine and air transport services are advised to take necessary precautionary measures in advance.
