Cold spells around Myanmar due to low pressure areas from China

Temperatures across Myanmar were reduced due to low pressure area from China and five townships have records of lowest nighttime temperature in history, said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director General of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“The low pressure area in China is intensified and westerly whirlwind may reduce the cold spell in the next two or three days,” he said.

The temperature in Mindut was 4.5°C and it broke the record in 55-year time. The temperature in Kyauktaw was 5.6°C and it broke the record in 33-year time. The temperature in Kalewa was 7°C and it broke the record in 55-year time. The temperature in Gyobingauk was 7°C and it broke the record in 35-year time. The temperature in Nay Pyi Taw (Oaktaya Thiri) was 11°C and it broke the record in 7-year time. The temperature in Labutta was 14°C and it broke the record in 6-year time, announced the DMH.

A low pressure area may form over the South Bay of Bengal. Weather will be generally fair over the North Bay and partly cloudy over the Andaman Sea and elsewhere in the Bay of Bengal.

According to the monthly weather report of the DMH, rain will be likely above normal in upper Sagaing Region, Kachin, northern Shan and Chin states, below normal in Taninthayi Region and about normal in Nay Pyi Taw, lower Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon and Ayeyawady regions, (Eastern and Southern) Shan, Rakhine, Kayah, Kayin and Mon states. 

Rainy days will be expected about 6 to 9 days in upper Sagaing Region, Kachin, northern Shan and Chin states, about 2 to 5 days in  Nay Pyi Taw, lower Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi regions, (Eastern and Southern) Shan, Rakhine, Kayah, Kayin and Mon states.

Night temperature will be about normal in Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon and Ayeyawady regions, Kachin, northern Shan, Chin and Rakhine states, below normal in Taninthayi Region, (Eastern and Southern) Shan, Kayah, Kayin and Mon states.

Foggy days will be expected about 15 to 21 days in Nay Pyi Taw, upper Sagaing and Mandalay regions, Kachin, Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayah and Mon states and about 7 to 14 days in lower Sagaing, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi regions, Kayin State.
