The Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) issued a statement on May 26 saying that the current reference foreign exchange rates would not be changed, but it would increase selling foreign currencies through bank counters.

The statement also says CBM will continue its assistance for USD liquidity and MMK liquidity as it takes measures for the stability of foreign exchange market and rates.

With intent to cause instable commodity prices, some unscrupulous persons and speculators are spreading rumours about higher reference foreign exchange rates to exploit or deceive those ignorant, the statement points out.

Currently, CBM has no plan to change its reference foreign exchange rates but it will continue support for USD liquidity and MMK liquidity and other necessary assistance to stabilize foreign exchange rates.

There have already plans to increase selling imprest foreign currencies at the counters of the banks and designating international Visa cards for overseas studies and medical treatments and those going abroad under the arrangement of international job agencies.

The public members are therefore, the statement says, not to trust such rumours, and those spreading rumours shall face action in accord with the existing laws, the statement says.

CBM then invites anyone to send complaints about those rumours to email– [email protected].
