YANGON------Hundreds of workers from BYMA Myanmar Construction protested yesterday for full salary and social-security allowances to be paid at downtown Yangon.

The construction workers were on strike at the construction site yesterday morning.

Negotiations did not manage to reach any agreement until afternoon. They then proceeded to Bogyoke Road and staged a road block protest.

The Regional MPs, the officials from Township Administrative Department and Social Welfare Department arrived at the protest and held negotiations with the  labour protesters.

“We demanded to pay our full salary. But, we didn’t get full salary and social-security allowances. The government provided social-security allowances during COVID-19 outbreak period. However, only workers from the office enjoyed the government’s allowances. We, the construction workers, didn’t get the allowances. That’s why we demanded it. Moreover, the officials cut our salary Ks 80,000 for Safety Suit which must be worn at the construction site. So, we requested officials to negotiate a cutting salary for Safety Suit. But, it failed. We are going to stage a protest until getting our demands,” said the worker protesters.

The workers’ protest caused the traffic jam. So, the traffic police members carried out the traffic clearance activities.

The employer frequently told the worker protesters to come to the worksite but the workers will be going to the worksite if the employer will agree to their demands.

The protest ended in the evening because the employer agreed to pay unpaid salary and social-security allowances on January 26th.
