According to a committee tasked with economic recovery efforts from Covid-19, most business owners that had taken Covid-19 loans had asked for extension of the loan period as they are unable to pay back the full amount.

"There are supervisory groups formed across states and regions to meet with the business owners that took out loans to asked them whether they are able to repay or not. Some say they are able to pay back a certain amount but many asked for extension because they can't pay back yet. Some are asking to only continue paying the interest. We held a meeting regarding this issue yesterday. On one hand, they are loans from the state so must be returned. But some will pay back some while some won't and some are willing to pay interest only. We are trying to find a solution for the good of the country as well as businesses," said Union Minister Aung Naing Oo of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and the Chair of the Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plan Committee (CERP).

The committee initiated the loan program on April 9, 2020. It was initially slated to only last for a year with a 1 percent interest rate. However, the State Administration Council had directed for an extension of another 6 months in order alleviate the sluggish local economy.

According to the commerce ministry's data, the CERP had given out loans and welfare amounting to a total of 1989 billion Kyat in which 1049 billion were loans.
