The Central Bank of Myanmar has set a foreign exchange rate of 2,100 kyats per US dollar, but it is around Ks3,300 on the black market, according to foreign currency dealers.
However, some exchange counters have reportedly closed and suspended buying and selling.
"Now the exchange rate is over Ks3,300 to around Ks3,500 per dollar in the black market. Money changers are operating only at central bank prices," said a foreign currency dealer.
Exchange rates of other foreign currencies available on October 6 this year in the black market were Ks3,545 per US dollar, Ks2,440 per Singapore dollar, Ks720 per Malaysia rupee, Ks92 per Thai baht, Ks465 per Chinese Yuan, and Ks23.5 per Japanese yen.
On August 27, 2022, the Central Bank announced that online businesses illegally trading foreign currencies would face effective action under the foreign exchange management law and regulations.
