An ancient tunnel was discovered at Thiho Shin Pagoda in Pakokku on August 4 while workers were digging for a drain and authorities came to inspect the ancient tunnel, sources said.

The tunnel had about 8 feet in depth and many locals came to watch it. The authorities reported it to the Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library of Bagan.

The authorities seek advice from Monks and pray for others to enter in the tunnel.

“We blew wind into the tunnel using a fan to have oxygen. An officer and five firefighters entered the tunnel using oxygen tanks. We didn’t see anything in the tunnel except three rooms with about ten square feet in space. We found a hole with about one foot in length inside a room. We didn’t find Buddha Images and ancient things in it,” said Lwin Ko Latt, an officer of the fire services department, who went inside the tunnel.

“The pagoda trustee board informed us that they found a tunnel near a pond in the pagoda compound this morning,” said Tin Aung Kyi, Ward 14 administrator.

The officials from the Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library of Bagan said they found the works of architects from the present days in some parts of the tunnel and they will make further research inside it.
