Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) is planning to compete for Rakhine ethnic affairs minister post in Yangon and Ayeyawady regions in the 2020 general election, said Myo Kyaw, secretary of the ALD.

The ethnic affairs minister post is chosen by people from the respective ethnic groups.

“The ALD is representing in the whole country and we will compete in the places where Rakhine ethnics stay in accord with our policy,” he said.

The party is implementing to form organizing committees, he said.

According to Chapter 4, Section 161, Sub-section (b) and (c) of Myanmar Constitution, representatives of the Region and State Hluttaws, each is elected from each national race determined by the authorities concerned as having a population which constitutes 0.1 percent and above of the population of the Union, of the remaining national races other than those who have already obtained the respective Region and State or a Self-Administered Area in that Region and State.

Although the ALD was joined hand with Rakhine National Development Party in the 2015 general election, later both parties had disagreements in policy and leading roles. The ALD was reestablished in 2017.

The ALD competed in No.2 Yathedaung Constituency in 2018 by-election and they lost.

Only Yangon and Ayeyawady regional governments have Rakhine ethnic affairs minister posts at the present.

Rakhine ethnic affairs minister for Yangon Region is Zaw Aye Maung, central executive committee member of Arakan National Party and Rakhine ethnic affairs minister for Mandalay Region is Tin Zaw from National League for Democracy.
