About 30 people have died and 1,213 people have been detained, sued and sentenced from February 1 to March 1, announced the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

Among them, four people are sentenced to prison terms, 61 have been issued warrants and 300 people are released, according to AAPP’s records.

“The authorities continued crackdowns in other regions and states and now they have ordered a crackdown in Yangon too. We found that they detained and tortured the protesters. They beat them on the way. The authorities don’t need to terrorize them if the detainees don’t resist them,” said Aung Myo Kyaw, Supervisor of AAPP office for Yangon.

Some protesters died and many were wounded as the military and police dispersed the protesters using rubber bullets, tear gas, smoke bombs and acoustic devices in some townships in Yangon including the main crowded areas such as Myaynigone and Hledan, sources said.

The police broke up the demonstrations before the protesters gathered in most of the townships starting from February 26 and hundreds of protesters and some reporters are detained daily.

The AAPP remarked the crackdown on protesters is violating Geneva Convention in addition to international human rights declaration and is committing torture.

Moreover the authorities sued President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who have been charged under natural disaster law and telecommunication act, with addition charges including Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code and Section 67 of the telecommunication act to sentence a long prison term intentionally for state leaders, it said.

The AAPP said the issuing of statements from the international communities is not enough due to the current human rights violations and they need to take effective action.
