A 15-year-old Myanmar girl was killed in a shooting by a gunman in Phuket, Thailand, according to a report by Thai media outlet Khaosod English.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on August 18, approximately 50 meters before the Siko intersection on Phra Phuket Kaeo Road in Kathu District. The gunman, riding a motorcycle, opened fire on a pickup truck carrying the Myanmar girl.

The shooter targeted the driver, identified as Kitipong, and the gunfire also struck a Thai man named Nattawut, who was seated next to the driver, and the 15-year-old girl, identified as Nan Phoung, who was also in the vehicle.

The young Myanmar girl sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of her head and succumbed to her injuries while being transported to the hospital by rescue workers.

Thai authorities investigated the shooting and identified a 19-year-old Thai national as the suspect. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to having had an argument with the pickup truck driver near a gas station on Patong Hill and later fired at the vehicle at a traffic light. The suspect was arrested at his rented residence in Thalang District, Phuket, and confessed to discarding the weapon in the sea at Khao Khad Viewpoint in Wichit, Phuket, according to the report.

The deceased Myanmar girl was the daughter of a Thai father and a Myanmar mother. She had been living in Thailand since childhood and had been working instead of continuing her education beyond high school.
