Some schools and rural health centers in Kyaikmaraw Township in Mon State have reopened after floodwaters receded, while the Myanmar Fire Services Department and relevant departments are jointly carrying out school cleaning activities to enable the remaining schools to reopen, according to reports.

Several schools and rural health centers in Kyaikmaraw Township have already resumed operations following the decline in water levels. Meanwhile, the Myanmar Fire Services Department and relevant departments are working together to clean the remaining schools so that they can reopen.

Heavy rainfall and runoff from mountainous areas caused the Attayan River to overflow, resulting in flooding in Kyaikmaraw town and villages along the riverbanks for almost the entire month of August.

Due to the flooding, a total of 35 basic education schools in Kyaikmaraw Township were temporarily closed, along with seven rural health centers.

The temporarily closed schools comprised five Basic Education High Schools, 11 Basic Education Middle Schools and 19 Basic Education Primary Schools. As the floodwaters receded in early September, Basic Education Primary School (Kawpyeik) in Kawpyeik Village, Kyaikpran Village Tract, and Basic Education Primary School (Kawdon) in Kawdon Village, Kawpanae Village Tract, reopened on September 4, according to a person close to the Township Education Department.

The source continued: “In addition, Basic Education Primary School (Kadar Ywarma) in Kadar Village Tract, Basic Education Middle School (Kharon) in Kharon Village Tract, Basic Education Primary School (Tarana West) in Tarana Village Tract, and No. 2 Basic Education Primary School and Basic Education Primary School (Branch 1) in Shin Saw Pu Ward also resumed operations from September 7.”

The source also said that at schools inundated during the flooding, mud and silt left inside classrooms are being removed and cleaned up through cooperation among the Myanmar Fire Services Department, relevant government departments, teachers and local residents after the floodwaters receded.

Similarly, as water levels in the Attayan River have fallen, the Lharkazine Rural Health Center in Lharkazine Village Tract, the Pawlaw Rural Health Center in Attayan Village Tract, and the Maternal and Child Health Center in Yanmyo Aung Ward, Kyaikmaraw, which had been temporarily closed during the flooding, have reopened as of September 7.

According to a person close to the Township Health Department, the remaining four rural health centers will also be reopened after cleaning and sanitation work has been completed.

Heavy rainfall and runoff from mountainous areas caused the Attayan River to overflow, inundating more than 6,600 houses in 15 wards/village tracts, including two wards in Kyaikmaraw town. More than 32,000 people from 6,697 households were affected by the flooding, according to reports.
