Heavy Rain Causes Flooding and Traffic Congestion in Parts of Yangon

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in some parts of Yangon, resulting in traffic congestion, according to some motorists.

Heavy rain began falling in Yangon at around 3 p.m. on September 7, causing flooding in several areas.

“Water has accumulated on Pyay Road near the overpass between the Seven Mile and Eight Mile areas, so cars have had to drive around the flooded sections,” a motorist said.

Similarly, flooding has occurred on roads near Tamwe Roundabout, Five-Storey Pagoda, Shwe Gone Daing Bridge and Pho Sein Road near Chatrium Hotel, causing traffic congestion, according to reports.

The flooding has also caused traffic jams on some roads across Yangon.

“There is quite a lot of rain, and it is also windy. Cars are stuck near Kyauk Taing in Thaketa,” a Yangon resident said.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), moderate monsoon winds are prevailing over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. A few clouds are developing over the northwest, west-central and southwest Bay of Bengal, while cloud cover ranges from moderate to cloudy over the Andaman Sea and the remaining areas of the Bay of Bengal.

The DMH said thunderstorms and rain are expected in scattered areas of Magway and Sagaing regions; fairly widespread areas of Naypyidaw, Mandalay and Bago regions, Kayah, Chin, Rakhine and northern Shan states; and widespread areas of the remaining regions and states. Isolated heavy rain is also possible in Yangon, Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi regions and Mon State, with a 100 percent chance of rain, according to the weather agency.

The DMH also warned that cumulonimbus clouds are developing over Naypyidaw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, Sagaing and Ayeyarwady regions, as well as Tanintharyi Region and Kachin, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states.

It cautioned that as these cumulonimbus clouds move, weather conditions including rain accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning and hail may occur along their paths, urging people to take precautionary measures in advance.
