The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) has banned the sale of 10 Chinese snack products at school canteens in areas under its control, citing health concerns, according to a joint announcement by its Health and Education departments on Sept. 1.

The MNDAA said its Health Department found during inspections that some snacks commonly consumed by schoolchildren contained ingredients that could pose health risks.

The products were found to contain substances including sodium cyclamate, TBHQ, Amaranth Red and phosphate compounds, as well as excessive levels of sodium, the statement said. It claimed the ingredients could have adverse effects on children's health, including their liver, kidneys, nervous system, cognitive development and bones.

The MNDAA also banned the sale of food products that do not have approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as expired products, at school canteens.

Vendors have been given a one-month grace period from the date of the order to clear their existing stocks and have been instructed not to place new orders or bring in additional supplies during that period.

After the grace period, joint teams from the Health and Education departments will conduct surprise inspections of school canteens. Vendors found continuing to sell the banned products will face action in accordance with MNDAA regulations, the statement said.

The 10 products named in the ban are La Mo Fang spicy cubes, KISS TABLETS, Su Niu Du vegetarian beef-intestine-style snacks, spicy aromatic crispy pig ears, Yu Mi Chang corn sausages, Su Xia Pa Zi vegetarian imitation frog snacks, Xiāng Là Jīn Zhēn Gū spicy enoki mushroom snacks, Wanghong Flower Flower Sticks, Daily Seaweed-Flavored Spicy Crisps and Doxing Shuang Spicy Sticks.
