The Myittha River in Kalay, Sagaing Region, has risen more than two feet above the danger level, with water levels expected to increase by more than one foot over the next 24 hours, Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology said.

The river rose above Kalay’s danger level of 1,100 cm on the morning of Sept. 3. At 12:30 pm., the water level was measured at 1,168 cm, according to the department.

The Myittha River originates in the Chin hills and flows through Kalay Township before joining the Chindwin River near Kalewa. Heavy and persistent rainfall in upstream areas has caused the river to rise.

Flooding has been reported in Phaungku village in Kyee Kone village tract, Kalay Township, with water entering parts of the village. Residents in affected areas are moving to higher ground.

Kalay Township Fire Station has deployed a rescue vehicle, two rescue boats and firefighters, working with other relevant organizations to assist with evacuations.
