Yangon — Teng Hui Myanmar, a garment factory in Yangon Region that produces clothing for H&M, will close at the end of September after failing to secure new orders, the factory and workers said. 

The factory has informed its more than 3,000 workers that it will shut down at the end of the month and advised them to look for new jobs, a worker said.

A factory representative confirmed that the facility would close at the end of September but did not provide further details.

Known locally as the Tin Htwe factory, Teng Hui Myanmar is located in Rakhine Yoe Gyi village, near the Western University roundabout in Htantabin Township. The factory has produced and exported garments for Swedish fashion brand H&M.

“I thought I would keep working here until I returned to my village,” one worker said, adding that farewell songs were played at the factory the previous night.

Workers said the factory had continued recruiting employees as recently as last year but had been forced to close after failing to receive further orders.

Teng Hui Myanmar began operations in 2013 and has been operating for more than 13 years. It currently employs at least 3,000 workers, according to workers.

Some factory workers have also expressed sadness over the closure in posts shared on social media.
