The government has systematically repatriated more than 72,000 foreign nationals from over 50 countries who were involved in transnational crimes and online scams, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe said.
He made the remarks at an awareness-raising discussion on preventing, protecting against and combating transnational crimes and online scams, held in a hybrid format at the Lokanat Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 25, 2026.
U Than Swe said the discussion was organized to enhance the knowledge of foreign affairs officials about domestic, regional and international cooperation in preventing and combating transnational crimes and online scams. It was also intended to enable Myanmar officials to clearly explain the country’s measures when engaging with other countries.
He said the government had designated such crimes as a threat to national security and had effectively cleared online scam centers through special operations. He added that more than 72,000 foreign nationals from over 50 countries had been systematically handed over to their respective countries of origin.
The minister also said Myanmar would continue to act as a responsible country through diplomatic cooperation with other nations.
Officials from relevant ministries subsequently discussed domestic policies and procedures for preventing and combating transnational crimes, existing challenges and future plans, as well as government procedures for receiving and reintegrating returnees involved in transnational crimes, including online scams and human trafficking.
They also exchanged views on regional and international cooperation in combating transnational crimes.
The discussion was attended by the Union Minister and Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary, Myanmar ambassadors and heads of missions based in ASEAN countries, as well as director-generals and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Immigration and Population, and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
Officials and diplomats serving at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Myanmar embassies, missions and consulates-general in ASEAN countries also participated in the event.
