The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has forecast scattered to widespread thunderstorms across most parts of Myanmar from August 24 to 28, with locally heavy rainfall expected in several regions and states.

The DMH said the weather conditions are being influenced by the strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, cloud bands breaking away from Tropical Storm “Narra” over the Gulf of Tonkin, and a low-pressure area forming along the northern coast of Odisha, India, extending into West Bengal and the northwestern Bay of Bengal.

During the forecast period, thunderstorms are expected in Nay Pyi Taw and the regions of Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, Sagaing, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi, as well as Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states.

Locally heavy rainfall is likely in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi regions, as well as Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states.

The DMH warned that heavy rain could be accompanied by strong winds, flash floods and landslides. Residents in hilly areas have been advised to remain alert to possible landslides, while those living near small rivers and streams should take precautions against flooding and inundation.

Domestic aviation services, as well as coastal and offshore fishing vessels and ships operating along Myanmar’s coastline and in offshore waters, have also been advised to exercise caution.
