President U Min Aung Hlaing officially inaugurated the restored Waziya International Standard Performing Arts Theatre in Yangon on July 27, marking the reopening of the more than 100-year-old historic landmark following extensive conservation and renovation.
The president unveiled the commemorative plaque and formally opened the theatre, while Union Minister for Information U Htein Lin, U ion Minister Hotels and Tourism and Culture U Maung Myint, and Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.In his address, the president said the restored theatre would help preserve and promote Myanmar’s cultural heritage, showcase works reflecting national identity, and serve as an attraction for foreign visitors. He added that the venue would function as a multi-purpose arts center hosting films, stage plays, traditional drama, puppet performances, dance and music events.
The opening ceremony was attended by senior government officials, invited guests, and members of Myanmar’s film, theatre and music communities. Prominent actors and entertainers, including Pyay Ti Oo, Nay Toe, Yan Aung, Ye Aung, Khant Si Thu, Phoe Chit, Soe Myat Thuzar, May Than Nu, Eaindra Kyaw Zin, Wutt Hmone Shwe Yi, Yoon Yoon, Dain Daung, Khin Hlaing and director Win Lwin Htet, were also present.
Built around 1923 on Bogyoke Aung San Road in Kyauktada Township, the Waziya Theatre is a heritage building featuring Beaux-Arts architecture and has been preserved while being upgraded into a modern international-standard performing arts venue.
