The Pathein–Shawpyar–Chaungtha road was temporarily closed after floodwaters overflowed onto the roadway following heavy rainfall, according to reports.

The flooding occurred on Chaungtha Road after continuous rain on July 13.

“Floodwaters crossed the main Chaungtha road near Htautkaung Village and Seikgyi Village. In the deepest areas, the water was about four feet deep. The flooding happened because of the heavy rain, which was extremely intense. Since the road was submerged and impassable, vehicles leaving Chaungtha had to turn back. When we arrived there at around 11 a.m. yesterday, everyone had to return. The rain continued heavily throughout the day. At the beach, it felt as if a storm was raging. It kept raining heavily until the evening and only eased this morning,” said Ko Moe Thet, who personally experienced the situation.

“This morning, we set out again right after breakfast because we were worried the same thing might happen again. The floodwaters have receded now. There are some minor landslides, and mud is still covering parts of the road. Vehicles have to pass through slowly. When we crossed this morning, there was no rain at all. Since it rained again in the afternoon, I’m not sure what the situation is now. If there is more heavy rain, it could happen again,” he added.

Regarding the incident, the Ayeyarwady Region Government also issued a statement, saying that floodwaters had receded and the road was reopened at around 11 p.m. on July 13. The statement added that the Pathein–Shawpyar–Chaungtha road is now accessible for public use once again.
