The Office of the President issued Order No. 39/2026 on April 17, granting a reduction of sentences for prisoners across Myanmar.
The amnesty, announced to mark the Myanmar New Year and in consideration of public peace of mind and humanitarian grounds, applies to individuals serving sentences in prisons, detention centers, and labor camps for offenses committed before April 17, 2026.
Under the order, death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment. Prisoners serving life sentences or indefinite terms will have their sentences reduced to 40 years, excluding those whose death penalties had already been commuted under previous amnesty orders.
In addition, prisoners serving more than 40 years will have their sentences reduced to 40 years. Those serving sentences of 40 years or less will receive a remission of one-sixth of their remaining prison terms.
The order was issued in accordance with Section 204 (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
