The Union Parliament has approved the President-elect’s proposal to appoint 30 ministers for these 31 ministries. However, it has not yet announced which minister will be assigned to each ministry. The list of nominees was read out in Parliament on April 7.
Most of the 30 nominees are current government officials, while some previously served under the administration of former President U Thein Sein. Only a few are between the ages of 55 and 60, with the majority aged over 60. The oldest nominees include Dr. Thet Thet Zin, around 80, and U Khin Maung Soe and Dr. Charlie Than, both about 75.
Among the nominees, senior military officials have been proposed for key ministries: General Tun Aung for Defence, and Lt-Gen Nyunt Win Swe and Lt-Gen Phone Myat for Home Affairs and Border Affairs. Lt-Gen Phone Myat is currently serving as Minister for Home Affairs.
Several current Union ministers have been re-nominated, including those responsible for natural resources, labour, the President’s Office, transport and communications, investment and foreign economic relations, legal affairs, education, science and technology, health, religious affairs and culture, agriculture, energy, industry, immigration, construction, and social welfare.
Most of the reappointed ministers are members of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) who won seats in the 2025 general election. The remaining nominees include senior party figures and former officials who served under the previous government.
Out of the 30 nominees, 28 are either current officials, retired military officers, or USDP members, with only two coming from outside these groups. These include U Than Maung, an ethnic Rakhine with experience in competition, labour dispute resolution, and intellectual property bodies, and Dr. Thet Thet Zin, currently chair of the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation.
In addition, the President-elect has proposed the reappointment of key officials to top positions, including the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, the Chair of the Union Election Commission, the Governor of the Central Bank, the Auditor General, the Chair of the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the head of the Constitutional Tribunal.
