A freight train on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway in Thaton Township was hit by a mine, according to sources close to Thaton Station.
On November 7, at around 8:25 am, No.686 freight train traveling from Thaton Station to Shwe Hle Station was hit by a mine between mileposts (125/18) and (125/19) on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway in Thaton Township.
The incident damaged two sections of the railway track and derailed four train carriages, including the locomotive of the freight train, according to a source close to Thaton Station.
He continued, “Engineering teams are working to reopen the railway as soon as possible. The railway will be repaired once the area is secured.”
Due to the incident, the Yangon-Mawlamyine-Yangon up and down trains scheduled to depart today have been temporarily canceled, according to officials from Mawlamyine Station.
Due to the explosion of the cargo train, No.82 down Mawlamyine-Yangon train scheduled to depart from Mawlamyine Station on November 7 and No.81 up Yangon-Mawlamyine train scheduled to depart from Yangon Station have been temporarily canceled, an official from Mawlamyine Station said.
He continued, “Passengers who had purchased advance tickets for the temporarily canceled train schedules will be refunded at the ticket booth at Mawlamyine Station from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm.”
On September 26, at around 8 pm, a mine was detonated on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway line between Don Wun Station and Thein Seik Station in Thaton Township, between mileposts 121/20 and 121/21.
