According to Myanmar Police Force, a man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for attempting to traffic a woman to China after contacting her through a TikTok advertisement offering to find “Chinese husbands.”
The 28-year-old woman from Chan Aye Tharzan Township, Mandalay, saw a TikTok post by an account named Dora (@dod45703cby) claiming that women could become Chinese wives, earn 20,000 yuan, and receive money in Myanmar. She contacted the account, which was linked to May Thet Paingfrom Myittha Township.
May Thet Paing arranged a meeting at a tea shop on 74th and 30th streets in Mandalay, where Myo Myo Thaw Htun, sent by May Thet Paing, appeared. He took the woman’s photos and videos to send to Nan Sai Lin Wan (alias Ma Nan) in Ruili, China, who was allegedly buying brides.
The suspect gave the woman 20,000 kyats for travel expenses and was arranging to send her to China when authorities arrested him. Police charged him under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law.
On October 29, the Maha Aung Myay District Court sentenced Myo Myo Thaw Htun to 11 years of imprisonment with hard labor under Section 35 of the law. The other two suspects, May Thet Paing and Nan Sai Lin Wan, remain at large, and arrest warrants have been issued for them.
