A total of 88 people have been prosecuted in 40 cases under the Law on the Protection of Multi-Party Democracy General Elections from Disruption and Sabotage, according to Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, who also serves as Chairman of the Central Committee for Security Supervision during the Multi-Party Democratic General Election.
He made the statement at the committee’s (4/2025) meeting, held at the Araindamar Hall of the Myanmar Police Force Headquarters on October 31.
The Union Minister said that the Union Election Commission (UEC) plans to hold the multi-party democracy general election in 102 townships on December 28, 2025, with Phase 2 scheduled in 100 townships on January 11, 2026. The campaign period for parliamentary candidates nominated by political parties has been set for 60 days, during which security measures must be enforced to ensure their safety.
He added that the initial voter lists have been announced at respective election commission offices, with many citizens verifying and amending their details. Security management for polling stations, voting machines, candidates, and voters must be maintained throughout the election period, he emphasized.
To ensure nationwide election security, the Central Committee has prepared eight specific plans under a comprehensive national security framework.
The General Administration Department has also established Call Centers for voter list inquiries and, in cooperation with the UEC and the Ministry of Immigration and Population, has responded to 732 voter calls, conducted 28,375 field inspections, 45,248 outreach activities, and 282,592 one-stop service (OSS) operations to ensure the completeness of voter lists.
The Minister also urged coordination with local election commissions to enable advance voting for those temporarily displaced, outside their constituencies, or facing criminal charges in police custody or prisons. He further highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of media personnel and election observers, both domestic and international.
As of October 29, authorities had arrested 83 men and 5 women for acts aimed at disrupting the election process. Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung called for continued efforts to investigate and take effective action against individuals involved in incitement and propaganda that could endanger election security.
